The Great Outspoken Book Giveaway

[Thanks to everyone who entered to win a copy of this awesome book and a set of our cool orange sweatbands.  We loved reading all the advice people gave in the comments, too.  The randomly picked winners are: Holly K. (Happy Birthday), Natalie, Tom O., Elizabeth G. (Merry Early Christmas) and Nikki T.]

When more than 60 smart church communications people come together to share advice, it has to be good, right?  That’s exactly what has happened with the new book Outspoken: Conversations on Church Communications.  The book started as an idea from Tim Schraeder and with help from a lot of folks, including Kevin Hendricks from Church Marketing Sucks, it’s now an incredibly valuable tool for church communicators.

I’ve just started reading the book and already find it to be a great mix of practical advice, personal stories and reminders of how our faith plays a critical role in the work we do.  Some of the voices I know.  Others are ones I’m hearing for the first time.  Yet all of them come together to form a great guide for navigating church communications.

Reading the book reminds me of where I was a little more than four years ago.  I’d transitioned out of journalism and into the world of church communications.  It was overwhelming for sure.  I was in over my head.  And knowing that I was working in ministry added more pressure.  During those first years, I read everything I could from the big and smaller names in Christian communications.  I wanted to get a pulse for where the church was while learning the best practices to help get us where we’re going next.  While I’m much more comfortable in the ministry world now, I still strive to learn everything I can.

Outspoken is a tool that does the work of seeking out those smart voices and putting them in one place.  So whether you’re new to church communications or have been at it for some time, there’s plenty to learn from this book.

That’s why we’re giving away FIVE copies of Outspoken paired with a set of our stylish Church Juice sweatbands.  Beyond equipping you with a great resource, like Outspoken, we also want to support the Center for Church Communications and Creative Missions – two great projects that will benefit from the proceeds from this book.

Here’s the details about our Outspoken giveaway:

  • Leave a comment below this post.  Give your best piece of advice or just say hey.  Either way, any comment counts as an entry.
  • Deadline: Friday, October 21, 2011, at 6:00pm Central.
  • If you win, you can choose from either the Kindle version of Outspoken or the paperback.

Thanks again to Tim and everyone else who worked to make Outspoken happen.  We really are better when we work together.  Churches will be stronger, better communicators thanks to your work.

Helpful things for our church communications have been:  consistency of order of info in announcements (date, name, descript, contact), upholding deadlines, word count (relating to available space), interconnecting our twitter/FB/websites/blog/Youtube/Picassa, not overlooking bulletin boards, word of mouth, and phone calls (to the non-tech crowds).

And… remembering that the goal of our job is to COMMUNICATE *so that* our members and the community can PARTICIPATE in all of the amazing things going on from our church. Remembering there’s a deeper reason for getting these communications ‘out there.’

I’d LOVE to win one of the books! :)

Flexibility is the key in dealing with everything.  I made a similar transition from corporate America to a ministry position and flexibility is the only reason I’m still sane.  As for more tangible advice… if your senior pastor says something in passing without an appearance of much thought, he still expects you to work on it and have something ready.

Yay for trying to win freebies! It’s my birthday. Wanna give me a present?

Holly Klaman 3:42 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

I have transitioned from corporate marketing to church communications. I would say my best piece of advice is to talk with people don’t talk at them. Every piece of communication is a conversation and should invite interaction, what is the call the action?! How can they get involved?

Marti Chavarria 3:48 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

I’m relatively new to church communications, so I’d love to win a free copy! Thanks for the opportunity!

I really enjoyed interviewing Tim Schraeder last year and really cannot wait to see the fruit of Outspoken as this thing gets into the hands of pastors, creatives, and communicators everywhere.

“Outspoken” is on my Christmas list - but I’d love to dig in to it sooner!  Please enter me in the drawing.  Thanks!

Elizabeth Gilbert 5:25 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

Count me in for the outspoken book!
Here’s my piece of advice: attended church juice workshop whenever possible the one in Canada last year was awesome.

Travis Gingrich 6:11 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

The great thing about “church” marketing is that I’m communicating love.
Jesus’ invitation to himself, has to affect my copy and layout.  There’s no need for cool, hip, sexy, sporty…  I don’t have to sell an image or lifestyle…. I’m just communicating truth.  The more I am in that ...day to day, the more that will naturally flow into my pieces.

Also spell check.

Hey! I still haven’t got a copy of this book. Wouldn’t mind it one bit if you wanted to share a copy with me.

Justin Baker 8:45 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

This is such an incredible project. It is so great to see so many dynamic communicators have worked
together to create a resource for other communicators like themselves. Starting to get into church communications myself, resources like these become priceless.

Brandon Robbins 8:50 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

To communicate effectively is to rupture, challenge, comfort, woo, strengthen, enliven, empower and liberate. To communicate ineffectively is to bore, lull, silence, maintain status quo, flatter, manipulate and coerce. Help me become a better communicator.

Mark Karris 9:01 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

Communicate to build others up and generate courage in them to do the things God may be calling them to.

Tom Farr 9:34 pm Thu, Oct 20, 2011

Church communications is about so much more than design. And we have the best product. But when it gets tough, it’s great to be encouraged by others who ‘get it’. I’d love to win outspoken.
